View Full Version : Missing NTLDR

Rob Thomson
January 8th 04, 01:19 AM
I decided that I wanted to re-format the hard drive on my
second PC (It has become a spare machine and I wanted to
do a clean install)
To format it completely, I temporarily fitted the drive
as a slave in my main PC and carried out a full format
(Both Machines run XP Pro)
I have now refitted the hard drive, and get a message on
boot up 'Missing NTLDR Hit Ctrl, Alt and Del'. If I do
that, I get back to the same prompt message.
I would have expected to be able to boot from the XP CD -
but this isn't happening either.
HELP please

Hi,

Well, of course NTLDR is missing - you formatted the drive, what'd you
expect? You may need to check the system boot order in the BIOS, sounds like
you may need to set it to boot the CD before the hard drive. Incidentally,
there was no reason to have removed the drive and formatted it in another
system, you could have done this as part of setup in the new installation.

As a workaround, boot a 9x boot floppy, add CD support and run the winnt.exe
file from the I386 folder. This will start the installer as well.

Good Luck Rob,
If you find a cure for this let me know for I've dealt with this message
for 2 years now.. Mine started when I partitioned my HD and ran a dual boot
with XP pro and Win98 to see if I liked XP.. Well after getting rid of the
partition and reinstalling XP Pro I started to get that message. I do not
get it on a cold boot but on 60% of my reboots,, I tried juggling the boot
up order in my bios with every conceivable combination but it hasn't made a
difference.. If you find a cure please let me know..

hey guys, here's your cure...really simple...get yourself
a windows98 startup disk, and boot up with it, with cdrom
support if you want, until you get to the a:\> prompt.
then type in "sys c:"(without the quotes). a message
will come back to you: system transferred or something
like that...now take out the floppy, put in your install
cd, restart your comp, and call me in the morning :-)

Sounds simple enough but I no longer have my 98 start up disk or my old Win
98 OS disk....

Um,

That writes 9x boot code - sure wouldn't help with a WinXP system. As a
matter of fact, doing that to a bootable WinXP system would render it
unbootable.

Think there must be more wrong.
I found an old Win98 boot up disk and got the PC started
with CD support. I then formatted the drive. However,
despite setting the system to boot from the CD, it is
refusing to.
I will not be defeated.
Paul, I have tried emailing you directly, but the mails
just get returned.

Sorry Rob, seems I haven't used that account for so long it expired... I am
using now so if you have a cure for the NTLDR problem
please forward it to me

Is the CD you are using an original silver or a CDR copy? If it's a
copy, it may have been made via a directory rip, which would not be
bootable.

The only way to get a bootable copy of a bootable CD is to make and
burn an "image" of the cd. Directory rips don't do this.

The problems with my own PC seem to be deeper than just a
WinXP issue.

I could not get WinXP to load from the CD (could not get
the PC to boot from the CD) so I eventually resorted to
plugging it as the main HD on my main PC and rebuilding
it from there - which worked perfectly.

I have now installed that drive back into my second PC
where it doesn't work. As it boots, I get the screen
asking whether I want to start Win in Safe Mode etc. If I
start in safe, I get the DOS screen with scripts that run
to some of the drivers and it then locks up. If I start
it in Normal state, it runs the scan disk bar across the
bottom of the screen and then locks. The countdown timer
sticks at 26 seconds.

I am now really lost - I may have to resort to paying
someone to look at it (none of my IT support friends can
give me any ideas). I have tried swapping RAM, but am
wondering if I had some sort of virus hit the Bios. I am
not sure if I could reflash the Bios from floppy (I am
not that clever).
