Plug and Play monitor? NOT!!

Just bought a new PC with XP-home edition.

It doesn't recognize the monitor.
It is identified as Plug & Play - instead of 19" ADI 4+.

How do I get the OS to recognize the right monitor?

I've deleted the driver and re-booted - same thing.
I've deleted the driver and tried to load (update) the
ADI driver I downloaded from the web - same thing.

Is there a setting I need to trigger?

Also - does it matter?

Other PC's I've gotten lately with XP identified all
their peripherals fine!

I have an old Sony 21'' that i got from ebay. it's not really supported by
xp pro but the plug n play does just fine. also check your video card.
it's really more important than the monitor driver. if it's intel, go to
their site and update. what's your resolution? and refresh rate?

What drivers are available? Is the monitor recent
manufacture or old, pre-XP?

See if you have a full range of resolutions and
refresh-rates available, if you do not then you should seek
assistance from the computer OEM, the dealer, the video card
supplier and the monitor manufacturer.

Try a Google search for drivers using as precise terms as
possible.

Video is Intel 82845G/GL.
Running 1280x1024 @ 85 Mghz

ADI has a driver for XP.
The qustion is HOW do I load it on?

The monitor is great and can run higher refresh rate and
resolutions.

Higher Refresh Rate and Resolutions - you need a video
card that supports these higher settings. If you cannot
change the settings it is your video card driver that
needs updating, not the monitor driver.
That being said, you need to make sure the video card
supports the settings you are trying to set, and if it
does, GREAT! Update your video driver. If not, sorry
you're out of luck - you need to get a newer video card.

I had a Philips monitor like that. If the monitor does not communicate its
brand/model to the operating system and/or XP just doesn't have an INF file
for it - you end up with the generic monitor designation. Finally got my
hands on the monitor's INF file from the manufacturer. Right click, select
Install and the needed monitor info was added to the operating system. It
showed showed up properly identified after that and had access to all of
the settings it was capable of.

I bought a new monitor, it had no drivers supplied.
I downloaded from manufacturer and installed.
An entry was made in device-manager, identifieing it, but if I go to look at
drivers, it says 'no drivers are required, or have been loaded for this
device.

Thus, all that the 'drivers' seem to do, is put the manufacturers name in
device-manager.

A monitor's INF file tells the operating what resolutions and refresh rates
it can support. And if necessary, will identify the monitor by name as
well.
