View Full Version : Normal dot

When I close a document in Word, a message says: The file
Mormal dot already exists. Do you want to replace the
existing file?
I don't know what it means. If I clck No or Cancel, a
message says: Changes have been made that affect the
global template, Normal dot. Do you want to save these
changes?
I've never knowingly changed the "global template."
All I want to do is save the particular document I've
been working on. Does anybody know how I can just make
this "Normal dot" line of questions disappear for good
without messing up my files?

Hi Dave,

Do a search for Normal.dot and delete them all.

Greetings --

Are you using any kind of antivirus software, and do you keep it's
virus definition files up-to-date? That message is a common

"To avoid this, you'll always want to start a new file by clicking the
new page icon, hitting Ctrl/N or clicking File/New. To fix the
problem, the user needs to reopen the Normal.dot file, remove the text
and resave the file." -

"However, my pet peeve is when someone mindlessly tells a user to
delete their Normal.dot! This is not good advice, particularly when
advising a new user! The user may not realize that many custom
settings they may have worked hard to create will be blown away when
they delete the file. Sure, it may fix the current problem, but may
also cause them many hours of work to recreate macros or custom styles
which are now gone! "
