power management

My standby doesn't work, neither does hibernate. As soon
as it says it's going to standby, it comes back on. In
fact, not even a screen saver will stay on, something
causes the computer to restart immediately. Furthermore,
the only options for power management is laptop and
desktop. Each time I choose desktop, it changes. I've
removed the scanner, turned off the printers, simplified
as much as possible. What next?
