View Full Version : Backup _files

When I save files from the internet onto my harddrive I
get the file and a folder with the file name and _files
extension. However after restoring the _files didn't
restore and I seem to have the contents instead. How can I
save internet files and the associated folder?

Thank you
Regards
Greg

I'm not sure what you mean by "restoring"?

I usually find it's easier to save a web page as a "web archive, single
file, *mht"

Otherwise to copy a site I use a program like "WinHTTrack". This is a
website copier that follows links to a specified depth etc

I'm not understanding your question...
When you use Save As> Web page, Complete: the results will be an HTM file
and a corresponding folder. The "_files" is not an extension. It is part of
the folder name.

Keep these two items together and clicking on the HTM file loads the page
and any saved content in the corresponding folder. Folder Options> View has
a setting that involves how the two parts should be treated: As a whole or
as separate and distinct parts. When treated as a whole, moving the file
will also move the folder.

NOTE: Some pages do not save well this way. For example, they may be frame
pages -- a composite of several web pages displayed in a single browser
window. Using Save As might save the frame that contains the side bar
instead of all frames.

I have moved many HTML/folder combos from one setup to the next. They still
work as expected IF the original save captured the complete page and its
contents.

Thanks Sharon - The problem is that I backed the directory which
contained saved websites ie filexxx.htm and the corresponding
filexxx_files folder using XP backup. When I restored the files the
"_files" folders where missing like if they where deleted, however,
all "_files" folders contents (gif's ets) were combined in the same
directory. How do I backup and have the "_files" folders remain
complete.

I wonder if this is particular to your burning program. Have never run into
this with sites I have saved to CD and later transferred back to the hard
drive.

Some of the burning programs have trouble with long paths - especially when
*not* using packet writing. You could try shortening paths to see if that
helps.

You may want to try zipping those pages and corresponding folders before
burning.

Or save the sites as MHT files instead of file/folder combos. MHT will plop
the page and folder contents into one large file. That would avoid the two
piece scenario that's giving you so much trouble.
