Hi Bonnie,
1. Open Control Panel
2. Double-click System
3. Select the Advanced tab, and click the Settings button under the
Performance header.
4. Make sure that on the Visual Effects tab, the option Use drop shadows for
icon labels on the desktop is selected.
If this doesn't help, right-click the desktop, point to Arrange Icons By and
make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked.

Is it just one icon that you want to change and the others
look the way you want? If so, then you need to right click
that icon, select properties, then change icon and browse to
find a icon that will be transparent.
Some programs written for applications prior to XP did not
have a default icon that would be displayed either way.

Bonnie
Right click on the desktop, select properties, select the desktop tab. In
lower right corner click on the color bar then select a LIGHTER color than
the one now in use, click on apply to see the change, if you don't like the
first color try another one. When you get one you can live with, click OK.
I like the light grey. I don't think you will fine one that is truly
transparent because there would be problems seeing the letters on a
multi-colored background.
