Wordpad came with my XP.
When trying to open this file:
http://bellsouthpwp.net/b/i/billurie/norma.doc
I get this error window:

Other people do not have this problem. Could I have some advice
as to how to uninstall Wordpad and re-install it so that it will
open that file?
Thank you

No offense, William, but due to Word macro viruses, I'm not about to open
someone else's DOC file.
What version of Word was the document created with?
What version of Word are you trying to read it with?
What kind of image does the document contain?
If using Word, have you installed all of the the graphic filters? To
install, run setup. Select "Modify" or "Add Components" from the list of
choices. Drill down to the graphic filters section and select to install all
of them.
Since Word is an Office program and not a part of Windows XP, you might get
a better response to this question over at the Word newsgroups.

William is asking about Wordpad (a standard Part of XP), not Word.
Accordingly, it's an appropriate topic for this forum.
This document opens find in Wordpad for me on XP Pro (William and I were
collaborating offline). I don't experience any problems using Word pad.
I don't have any ideas on why Wordpad on another machine would be
different.

I understand why you're cautious about opening my file,
and understand it's not personal. But Rob answered you
completely. He opens that file fine, I can't. So what I
was asking, in essence, is direction in repairing what obviously
is wrong with this piece of software, furnished as a part of XP.

One thing more: On my Slave hard drive, I have XP Home
Edition. The Wordpad furnished there opens this .DOC
fine, just as Rob said it should. Therefore........how do I
uninstall and re-install WordPad on this XP Pro?

I'm now a little puzzled why you have two versions of XP (?) and two
versions of Wordpad ...
Norm
December 5th 03, 11:19 PM
William, if you have XP on the other drive and WordPad works fine there why not do a search of your master drive for WordPad.* rename all the files and copy wordpad.* from the slave to the master.

XP-Home came with the PC ... when that drive went bad, I installed
XP Pro on a new drive, and when the bad drive was replaced,
re-installed XP Home on that. It's kind of my own way to have a
sure backup.......alternate hard drives. And it gives me a secure place
to
put 'drive images'. But the question is, now that, with your help, Rob,
we've established that my XP-Pro should have its WordPad re-installed,
where do I get it? Presumably from my XP-Pro CD, but I'd be
happier with a download.

Just to muddy the waters a little more :-)....I've been following this
thread and thought I'd try an eXPeriment. I downloaded and opened your file
in Wordpad. I got the same results as you did. (The computer on which I
tried it has a clean install of WinXP Home SP1 and updates. No other
programs installed.) I have seen this happen before when trying to open
Word files in Wordpad, but I don't know why it happens. I always just
assumed it was because Wordpad is a very basic word processor which simply
can't handle documents created and formatted in a more sophisticated program
such as Word. By the way, there is a Word viewer available. It will allow
you to open Word files, but not alter them. Check the link

I thought of that, Norm, but I thought getting the latest,
presumably best, from the horse's mouth, would be the
best idea.

Thank you, RW. It's gratifying to know that I'm not alone.....
and probably not doing anything wrong. I'll just mention
in passing that I think it was foolish to assemble a group
of JPGs in a file with .DOC extension, but then again, what
should the sender have done? I myself upload them to my
website but this particular sender doesn't do that.

Not that it really matters now but why didn't the sender just attach several
jpg files to individual emails? Seems they would have been much easier to
handle then. Just a thought.

I think the root-cause of the Wordpad problem, sometimes works and
sometimes doesn't work, is not necessarily related to the Wordpad
executable. William has determined that of the two copies he has (and
why he has 2 copies is another story) they are exactly the same.
However, Windows works on using the underlying system for a lot of
functionality. My hunch is that there are differences (and perhaps
bugs) in underlining dependancy files.
The only way I know to work this, should this problem be pursued is to
use the terrific tool "Dependancy Walker" by Steve P. Miller. Download
free from http://www.dependencywalker.com/. This program used to be
distributed by Microsoft as part of MSDN. It may well be still
available via MSDN...I don't know.
From his web site:
"Dependency Walker is a free utility that scans any 32-bit or 64-bit
Windows module (exe, dll, ocx, sys, etc.) and builds a hierarchical tree
diagram of all dependent modules. For each module found, it lists all
the functions that are exported by that module, and which of those
functions are actually being called by other modules. Another view
displays the minimum set of required files, along with detailed
information about each file including a full path to the file, base
address, version numbers, machine type, debug information, and more.
Dependency Walker is also very useful for troubleshooting system errors
related to loading and executing modules. Dependency Walker detects many
common application problems such as missing modules, invalid modules,
import/export mismatches, circular dependency errors, mismatched machine
types of modules, and module initialization failures."
To pursue why WordPad works one way and not other, investigate the
underlying dependancy files and differences in versions. It's a very
eye-opening excercise to see all the dependancies.

Norm, I can't answer that question, and I doubt that the
sender will. Of course it would have made things
straightforward, but strange people act in strange ways.
It did serve the purpose of forcing me to get an
education (with Rob Schneider's help) in how WordPad
and WordView operate.

Perhaps I can close this chain with an observation, and one
question which perhaps the MVPs can answer:
The .DOC file I received, created I know not on what type
system, opens just fine with WORDVIEW, downloaded
from Microsoft website. That file is a collection of photos,
presumably originally .JPGs. As previously documented,
it will not open with WordPad from Accessories in XP.
Both WordPad and WordView open ordinary .DOC and
other files containing text.
Is all of the above th way Microsoft intended it to be?

Bill,
The compatibility for Word DOC files and the Wordpad that ships with XP
only goes up to Word 6 (Read Only) . "Rich Text Format" (RTF files) is the
preferred file type for Wordpad.
Cannot Save Files in the Word for Windows 6.0 Format Using WordPad in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283781&Product=winxp
PS: I just downloaded and opened the DOC file with Wordpad. File opened but
saw quick glimpses of "importing... <something, something>" while each
image was being processed. I have Word installed on this machine and
suspect that the extras in Office Shared Tools or a mechanism particular to
Word (and apparently WordViewer) came into play in regards to successfully
processing that file.
