Sharon. I can produce this effect too (using XP Home with all the patches
and Classic View).
I've attached a (small) GIF image (Explorer.gif). Please excuse the odd
colours, but I've reduced the colour depth to save newsgroup bandwidth.
If you look at the XRMHOEM_EN section in the left hand pane, you'll see
the effect with the I386 folders. - This is an original OEM XP Home CD.
You can produce it by clicking on the root (E:) in the left-hand pane,
double-clicking the I386 folder in the right-hand pane to open the folder,
and then double-clicking the COMPDATA folder (again in the right-hand
pane) to open it. It only happens with sub-folders, not with ones in the
root of the drive.
It's most odd because you can end up with it showing all the sub-folders
in one of the I386 entries and just the COMPDATA one in the other, both in
the same treeview.
AFAICR, it's done it on this machine ever since I bought it new at the
beginning of this year (with SP1 already installed), so it's not due to a
recent patch.

Thank you John for the explanation, the picture and the bandwidth save :)
Yes, that is exactly the problem I'm having

Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you folks. The MS news servers have
been having problems the last few days and was not able to download John's
image to see what's going on here.
The servers are more stable now but still can't see John's post here or on
Google Groups.. Anyhow, I used my XP CD and duplicated the steps as
written. Sorry, guys... I do not see the same duplication. Explorer is
displaying files and folders correctly in both panes: Tree side and folder
contents side.
Something that XP does differently than what you may be used to from other
versions of Windows, is that will automatically open a branch of a tree
when selected on the left hand pane.
So clicking the i386 folder on the left, shows the folders ASMS, COMPDATA,
etc in both panes. Older versions of Windows left the branch closed ( with
a plus sign (+) next to i386 instead of a minus sign (-). This feature can
be turned off by deselecting "Simple Folder View" in Folder Options> View.

Yes. I've had all sorts of problems with the MS servers here from the UK,
but they seem to be reasonably ok now.
Your suggestion doesn't really explain why one can see *two* versions of
the same folder in the left-hand pane, so I'll mail the image direct to
you if you like. It's only around 19k.

Sure, John. Emailing the image to me would be fine. Remove the DELETE from
the return address. Oh heck, even easier... my email is

Got your email. Remembered that I have an OEM CD for my tablet PC (XP Pro
in one folder, XP tablet extensions in another). Tried that - again
following the step by step directions posted before. Still can't duplicate
this.
I also tried double clicking on a few of the *.CABs and other compressed
folders. These start out on the right side but when double clicked get
added to the left side with their contents displayed on the right. All of
the additions were properly indented on the directory tree. Not one showed
up as a false duplicate. I checked the MS Knowledge Base for anything on
duplicate folders but found nothing that applied.
I'm not sure what's going on with your OEM CDs. If you're very curious, I
guess you could ask the OEM's tech support about it. But if the disks work
and can restore the computer properly, may want to just chalk this up as
one of life's little mysteries.
Sorry I wasn't able to find out anything more concrete about this.

Hi Sharon.
You have to click in the right hand panel and the duplicated folders will
appear in the left hand panel.
I'm using WinXP Pro SP1, it is not an OEM version.

It is actually a genuine MS hologrammed CD, not one copied by my OEM
supplier, and I only used that as an example to show that it wasn't one
I'd burned myself. - It does it with any commercially produced CD.

No worries as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for investigating.

Yep, that's what John pointed out in his description earlier in this thread
and that's the way I tested. I used several CDs: retail XP Pro upgrade,
retail XP Home and an OEM XP Pro/Tablet CD.

The OEM I have is not hologrammed but it is badged by the OEM and it does
contain the standard XP setup files vs a ghosted image. Interesting
problem. Enjoyed checking it out. Just wish the conclusion had been a bit
more definitive about *why* that behavior occurs.

My copy is also a hologrammed CD, well, I guess I'll have to live with that
annoy duplication.
Thanks guys.

You're welcome, Miguel. At least now you know that you're not the only one
that sees this behavior and that your CD will still work when/if it is
needed.
