XP Pro - SP1 Setup Error

After downloading SP1, during installation I received
a "Service Pack 1 Setup Error - The file c:\program
files\messenger\type.wav is open or being used by another
application. Close all other ....." I disabled all
startup items and checked task manager and tried again,
same problem. Any ideas?

Perform a "clean boot", then download and install SP1 directly.
