Hi there,
I recently purchased a full version of XP Pro and am
attempting to upgrade my system from Windows 98. During
the installation routine, an Upgrade Report was produced
and under Installation Requirements the following message
appears:
"Other Operating systems Found. You cannot upgrade this
Wimdows installation to Windows XP because you have more
that one operating system installed on your computer.
Upgrading one operating system can cause problems with
files shared by the other operating system and is
therefore not permitted."
Yet on page 4 when talking about backup files, the report
states that "during the upgrade to Windows XP, setup
removes Windows 98 from your computer".
After this report has printed the Installation procedure
prompts me to quit. Please tell me how to proceed from
here.
Kind Regards,
D

Hi, D.
There are basically 3 ways to transition from Win98 to WinXP. In each case,
you boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and choose from the prompts:
1. Upgrade - start with Win98 and end up with only WinXP in the original
location. During installation, WinXP Setup will attempt to migrate your
hardware drivers and installed applications.
2. Clean install - let WinXP Setup repartition (optional) and reformat your
HD before installing WinXP. You will need to back up your data beforehand
and restore it afterward. No need to back up Win98 itself, since it will be
replaced. No need to back up your applications; they must be installed
after WinXP - from the original CDs or other media - so that the proper
entries can be made in the WinXP Registry.
3. Dual boot - start with Win98 and end up with BOTH Win98 and WinXP - in
SEPARATE volumes! WinXP Setup will handle this automatically when it
detects Win98 installed and you tell it to install WinXP in a separate
volume. (A volume is either a primary partition, or a logical drive in an
extended partition, on any HD in your computer.)
Method 1, the Upgrade, is the quickest in the short run. However, many
upgraders have reported that the migration of drivers and applications was
less than perfect and they had a number of nagging issues; they wound up
doing a clean install later. Yes, you CAN upgrade using a "full" retail
WinXP package.
Method 3 lets you run both versions for a while until you are comfy with
WinXP. Then you can delete Win98 to recover the disk space that it uses.
Most users agree that Method 2, the Clean Install, gets the best results
quickest. (In the process, it also gets rid of all they accumulated garbage
that you've been meaning to clean out anyhow.)
Methods 1 and 2 can be done with only a single volume; Method 3 will require
a second volume - or some unpartitioned space in which a new volume can be
created during Setup.
It's your computer, your choice.
