When I do a start shut down I receive the following
windows message. "Other people are logged on to this
computer. Shutting down windows might cause them to lose
data. Do you want to continue shutting down?"

There is only one profile on this PC and it is not
connected to any other computers. The internet connection
is dial-up.

Chris,

The behavior described by the OP is not at all similar to the Blaster virus.
This behavior is usually caused if you 'Switched Users' instead of 'Logging
Off' and in again.

Chris,

This behavior is usually caused if you 'Switched Users' instead of 'Logging
Off' and in again. This can include switching between Admin and your user
logon.

that was stupid on my part! i'm not sure of a reason it would do this with
only one account on the computer.
