My desktop suddenly looks like a "window". The left
border now has a "pane" that has "folder tasks", "other
places", "details". If you "click" on the desktop the
other windows disappear. You can bring them to the front
by clicking on them in the task bar. How do I get rid of
this view?

Click Start | Run | type "regsvr32 /i shell32". Restart Windows.
