Control Panel apps and recycle bin open and other basic
system functionality works fine in safe mode, and works
if in the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties | Start Menu
| Customize | Advanced |Start Menu items, I
select "Display as a menu". But trying to use Control
Panel, Recycle Bin, Open and other commands forces a mini-
crash of the system (with all desktop icons and the
taskbar vaporizing as the system sort of regroups and
stabilizes) - if the ordinary "Display as a link" option
is selected.
If it is related, almost all my standard Window
accessories are missing from the menuing system (though
work if found in Explorer).
MAY have predated XP Update, but have XP Home with latest
updates installed, Norton Antivirus doublechecked, Dell
P2 550mhz with 364 ram -- decent system.
Seems like some registry key or system files corrupted.
On line with Microsoft first level support person for
hours, tried to load without any but basic services, and
none of this fixed the crashing problem. (I later
discovered I could at least gain functionality with
the "Menu" approach.)
Grateful for any help!!!!
