View Full Version : Disable firewall for MS downloads???

Do you need to disable your firewall to download critical and non-critical
patches? I've never done this, and am now wondering if this will have some
affect on it. I have over 80 downloads listed in my installation history,
and I believe that's all the patches I selected, but am not sure. Maybe
some aren't showing up, for this reason.
Can someone tell me if this presents any type of problem, and if I'll have
to redownload anything?
Thanks for any help in advance

I would not disable any firewall because that is a
protection from Blaster and similar attacks from the
Internet.
I logon to Windows Update with my firewall and McAfee virus
scan active. I do my update scan and if there are any
updates I exit the vs background scanning and select the
update.

It only takes a couple of seconds for someone to infect your computer if you
turn off the firewall. Don't do it!

Thanks, I didn't think there was a reason to disable the firewall while
downloading these, but I thought I read a post that said you should, in some
cases (Office Update). Fortunately, I've never disabled my firewall, and
maybe that's why I haven't had any problems with Blaster, Swen, etc. I did
get those annoying bogus emails (Swen) but my AV caught everyone, plus I
"won't" open any attachments. Just to be extra careful, I download all the
new AV def's once a week--and would more often if they were available--and
also get the MS critical patches the day they're released.
Thanks again, just wanted to be sure, even though there are those who say
you won't pick up these nasties from a Microsoft download site ;-)

If you are using Norton AntiVirus, they put up a new update almost every
day, but YOU must go and get it. Go to
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html to get the daily
update.

No! No! No! Never disable either your Firewall or Anti-Virus programs while
online.

I don't know how to use "Intelligent Updater" also, I thought it was for
people on a network, or for people who don't practice safe computing ;-).

Greetings --
No, you do not need to disable the firewall for this purpose.
Doing so would be sheer folly, in today's Internet environment.

Greetings --
Nope. All you have to do is let it run, and it will update your
virus definitions.
