Upgrading to XP from Win 98

If I want to upgrade from Win 98 to XP Pro will an Upgrade CD get me a
full version of XP Pro installed provided I have the Win 98
Installation CD?

Will the resulting XP installation be the full version such as would
be obtained had I used a normal XP Pro Installation CD instead of an
Upgrade version ?

The only difference between the upgrade version and full version besides the
price is that the upgrade version requires proof of ownership of a previous
version of windows that is on the upgrade list.

Yes. You can even clean-install Windows XP if you want or if this is
required. You just need the Windows 98-CD at the hand for to do this.

Yes, if you choose to do a clean installation. The upgrade and
full versions are identical, except that the install the upgrade
requires proof of ownership of a previous qualifying version,
either installed on the drive or on a CD which can be inserted
when prompted to do so.

Greetings --

It is possible to perform a clean installation using an Upgrade
CD.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

Once installed, there is no difference between installations
created by an Upgrade CD versus a full CD.

yes... you will get the full version of XP Pro. BUT... I would format the
drive, and do a clean install of XP instead of doing an upgrade from an
installed version of 98. You can do this if you have the original 98 cd,
since XP will ask for it when doing the install if there is no OS loaded on
the computer.
