modem volume and aol 8

i run windows xp, and connect to the net through aol. i
want to turn off the volume on my modem, but although i
have dragged the slider to 'off' i still hear the modem
dialling. is there any way i can shut off this infernal
noise?

control panel \ system \ hardware \ device manager
expand the modem area, highlight your modem
Right click to see properties
In the advanced tab, in the box for extra settings put M0
That's zero, not the letter O
Apply and okay your way out.
