View Full Version : Scan disk

I just upgraded to Windows XP and have learned to hate
it. Anyway, is there any way to run a thorough scan
disk, as in Windwos ME, or only a surface scan, (which I
finally found through a bunch of totally obscure terms)?

Many people at first hate things that are new to them. Give it a
chance; in my view it's far and away the best and most stable
version of Windows ever.

The XP equivalent of Scandisk is called chkdisk.

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

Start > Run > Cmd, Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.

You're using a new operating system that is based upon NT. It used to be
considered a "professional O/S. Of course things will be different. Do you
want to be stuck with ME the rest of your life, or do you want to learn and
grow?

It may help you to navigate around XP if you set the look of XP to
"classic".. right click on the START button and select properties.. then
click on CLASSIC..

Thank you for all who responded to my question. However,
what I asked was if XP had a "thorough" Scan Disk (Check
Disk which I have already found and run, although it
interrupted itself when almost done and therefore was
never completed) vs. a surface disk scan. I assumed
because of the time of the "check disk" that it was a
surface scan. So might someone be able to answer that
queston for me?

Chkdsk _is_ thorough, much more so than Win9x's Scandisk was ever
designed to be. What, exactly, are you trying to do/learn with
Chkdsk?

Run chkdsk with the /r switch. It performs a thorough surface scan. It works
upon a reboot. It can take hours on a huge drive. It is not hung up.
