Hide back content of system folders

Hi there!

The first time I tried to browse a system directory on XP,
- say C:\WINDOWS, or c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 - there was a
warning page saying (approx.) "Content of system directory
hidden", followed with a hypertext link saying "display
content".

I did click on this 'display' option, and now it seems that
the warning page won't show up anymore, and I end-up with
the content straight away each time (even after restart).

I think it was a good reminder, so I'm trying to activate
that warning page again. In other words I'd like to always
have to confirm that I do want to display the content of
those specific directories. In Win98 it used to be a .htt
page, but I can't find the same thing on XP.

You, sir, are a wise man who will greatly enjoy Windows XP.

Open Windows Explorer or My Computer and open the Tools menu. Select Folder
Options and then the View tab. Remove the checkmark in 'Display the contents
of system folders' (and place a checkmark in 'Do not show hidden files and
folders' if one is not already there.)

In time you may see the need to view these files and folders, inwhich case
you reverse the above procedure.

Thank you Tom for your prompt response.

I do not have my own PC handy right now, so I'll try it
tonight.
However I thought I had tweaked those very options already
without the expected result (i.e. having that watchdog page
showing up instead of the file-listing before displaying
the files in any system folder), but I may have to restart
either a new Explorer/browser or XP althogether, so I'll
play some more with it.

Open Explorer, go to the folder you want to hide (some you can hide,
others you can't), on the standard toolbar (view>toolbars) make sure
Search and Folders are unselected (if you see folders on the left, click
the Folders button), now on the left in System Tasks there should be a
link to "Hide the contents of this folder."

Hi John,

This does look promising!
I usualy have the folders-tree displayed on the left, so I
probably have missed that link in System Tasks.
I'll try it tonight!
