when I first set up XP had it so on bootup file checking screen would not
come up each time, suddendly it comes up each boot. forgot how to set to
stop it /

Don't disable it. If you shutdown normally you won't get a chkdsk on the
subsequent reboot.
If you're running FATxx partitions, then you have some problems that need to
be fixed. Skipping the chkdsk on restart will lead to further problems with
the HD structure. If you're running NTFS and getting chkdsk on boot up then
you have *major* HD structural problems.
Why are you getting chkdsks? What issue are you having with normal shutdown?
