View Full Version : Clearing IE Cache Files

Denis Mahoney
April 26th 03, 05:57 PM
I am having a problem clearing the files from the IE cache. When I click on
delete files, the system stops and I get a RUNDLL32 error.
I am a rank amateur at this stuff but suspect I have some sort of registry
corruption. I have also noted that when shutting down I get pop up warnings
indicating the XPRT Window is shutting down as well as MSN6 which runs to
the "End Now" prompt. Once clicked the computer will shut down fine.
Could someone please indicate what the problems might be as well as (I hate
to ask but am literally quite apprehensive about registry detail) giving me
a detailed remedy.
Thank you kindly

Denis

Do start->run->msinfo32 [enter]

Expand the software branch. Click on the startup programs entry. Hit ctrl-a,
then ctrl-c to copy the data. Paste it back here.

That's what I was looking for however the smoking gun isn't laying there in
the open either. :-(

The 5 instances of CTFMon being loaded is interesting. :-/ That's a bit
weird. I assume you have Office XP with voice recognition installed?

There's no mention of auto launching of MSN. So presumably shutdown problem
with MSN only happens after you've gone online?

You have Netscape installed. Do you use both IE and NS?

You do have a few things loaded that are pure overhead and may be causing
problems.

There's a couple of things you can try. First thing is to eliminate the
stuff start up that's nothing more than fluff. You can either use msconfig
for that, or depending on the application, you can configure it not to fire
up at startup. Initially it may be easiest just to use MSConfig. Do
start->run->msconfig [enter] then go to the startup tab.

Some items that are superfluous:
Microsoft office startup isn't needed. That only makes a tiny bit of sense
if you're a secretary in a large, networked pool.
Realplayer doesn't need to be run at startup unless you're using it for real
time notifications.
Netscape, if you're using it, doesn't need to be in the systray. Just pin it
to the start menu, or drag it to quick launch.
Winzip doesn't need to be in systray unless you make your money unzipping
and zipping files all day long.
eBot can be disabled. Don't know why they think it has to be quickly
accessed the couple or three times a year most people actually use it. That
is unless you actually use it constantly during the day.
Share to Web Namespace daemon : are you actually a heavy user of this?

Other stuff might be possible to disable from startup, but it depends on how
you use your machine and whether or not it's a critical function. It's
possible that both of your problems could be related to something that is
being started with the system.

One other thing you can try, if you have admin rights, is to reboot into
safe mode to purge IE's cache. If that works, then that indicates that
something in the startup is problematic. If it fails, then there is a
different issue that needs to be looked at.

I do have Office XP with voice installed yes!
I do not have MSN auto launch and have just changed the settings on
messenger to coincide.
I was using Netscape to review webpage designs in that browser but, as it is
no longer needed have uninstalled it.
Working on the overhead and trying to figure how to control them not
launching with boot up...no worries...I can work through that!
I have gone into msconfig and have tried to change the launch of the
programmes you mentioned by unchecking them but they seem to want to persist
in rechecking after the system is rebooted. Comments?
As far as the purging of the IE cache...nothing seemed to work until I
decided to do a DiskCheck which allowed me to delete the cache. When I
rebooted afterwards I tried using the Control Panel to exercise an IE dump
and it worked fine.
Perhaps it was just one of those Microsoft anomalies but seems to working
fine now...will report back on the message screens popping up when I shut
down if they continue.

Thank you so much for your time and insight!
