What is "scan disk" called in XP? And how do I access it
so I can run it before Defragging?

In order to access Check Disk, open MY COMPUTER, right-click on your =
drive
and select Properties > Tools > Error-Checking > Check Now and place =
checkmarks
in one or both Check Disk Options, click START and then reboot your =
computer.

Chkdsk. You can access it any of the standard ways, such as from
Start | Run.
