View Full Version : Install RAID after initial XP install?

Lost hard drive and did a clean install of XP. MB is Gigabyte GA8IEXP
with onboard Promise RAID (IDE). I noticed that XP Install asked
early on if I wanted to install a RAID controller. I didn't have the
drivers to hand so I passed the opportunity to set up the RAID
controller at that time. Everything else went fine but Device Manager
of course shows the "yellow ?" for the RAID controller. I manually
installed the Promise XP driver (from Promise.com) and now Device
Driver shows a line item for the Raid Controller with another "yellow
?" that says the controller can't start.

I'm started a reinstall so that I could get the initial RAID
Controller setup opportunity but I would need to uninstall Winfax and
Autosave first. I'm willing to do that but I thought I would reach
out for help first because I'm not sure that wouldn't be a rat hole
too.

The basic question is whether there is a way to install the Promise
IDE RAID Controller after XP has been installed without it. Thanks in
advance for any help.

Have you tried the drivers from Gigabyte? There are times that the MB
vendors will make just enough of a change in the hardware that OEM chipset
drivers will fail. Also, make sure you're running the latest chipset BIOS,
but make sure that it comes from Gigabyte and Gigabyte only.

Raul,

I can't answer for Gigabyte, but my MSI mobo instructed me to install the
RAID (Promise) drivers AFTER installing WinXP the conventional way. Works
fine this way.

I think the answer depends on what Gigabyte did in their design. Check their
Website or Tech Supt for the best answer.
