I think I have been doing all that you say.

Anyway I 'saved' the file Grey Poupon.eml in a subdirectory, but when
I double-click on it I get the error shown in the attached jpg. I get
this same error on all .eml files sent to me now by my brother.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Why are you bothering to save them as .eml files? Either keep them in a
folder in OE or save them as a text file, when you can access them with any
text editor.

Are you using Outlook Express as your email client?

Does the message appear correctly within Outlook Express when it first
arrives?

Within OE, the message is not an *.EML file. It is stored along with other
received email in the inbox folder's DBX file. An OE email does not
become an EML file until you manually save it outside of OE or until you
drag it out of your inbox and drop it into a personal folder on your hard
drive.

This is what I understand from what you've written:
You've saved the email message outside of Outlook Express in a folder named
C:\Agentfiles. This action creates an .EML file of the message.

Let's forget about the attachment for a moment. Can you open the saved
email (that now has the *.EML extension) using File> Open in OE or by double
clicking on it? Or is this the point where you get the error message in the
JPG you sent to the newsgroups? Be sure to try both methods of opening the
file.

NOTE: I was able to open the *.EML file you sent to the newsgroups here by
simply double clicking on it. OE is not my default email program but it still
opened that message for me.

Also note, a saved EML file is not an attachment. It is simply a saved
email message. At this point I see no indication that there is an
attachment to this email of any kind.

If you are on a machine that is connected to an Exchange server, that may
be the reason that you have trouble opening EML files (see article linked
below). If this is the case, the suggested workaround is to *only* use
File>Save AS to save email messages outside of OE. However, since you're
having so much trouble with this I'm tempted to side with Gordon's
suggestion of copy/pasting the email content to a word processor such as
MS Word and save the resulting DOC file instead.

If you are not on a machine connected to an Exchange server, check the
association for EML files in Folder Options> File Types. Scroll to EML files.
Click Advanced. Select the Open action and click Edit.

On the screen that appears:
Under the action "open" you should see:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1

The quotation marks and spacing are essential!
Below that command line, "Use DDE" should be checked. Application should
show msimn and Topic should be System. Click OK. Log off and log on again.
Try opening the EML file again.

PS: If your Outlook Express program (msimn.exe) resides in a different
folder, change the path above accordingly but keep the quote marks and
spacings the same.

My msimn.exe is at C:\Program Files\Outlook Express. Properties for
the OE icon show:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"

I changed it to

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1

and when I double click on the OE icon now, I get the error saying
that '%1' does not exist or is being used by another application.
Basically the same error window.

Thanks

You didn't follow directions. You should insert that line in Folder
Options> File Types for the EML file type as directed. Leave the OE icon
alone! Go back and try again.

As far as I can tell, I already have "C:\Program Files\Outlook
Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1 where you specify. I pasted it in anyway,
but as before, when I click on 'okay', I get this error window:

The specified program could not be found. Make sure the file name and
path are correct.

BTW, I do have msimn.exe at C:\Program Files\Outlook Express.

I figure maybe my Outlook Express needs to be reinstalled, but how can
i do that short of re-installing a full XP?

Thanks
