Hi

Iv just bought a new PC but I'm having difficulty with one
little thing, I have previously been using Win95 for many
years without a problem so no doubt I'm just doing
something wrong and not following the instruction properly.

I have some movies in a folder, and most of them require
different programs to open them with (WMP)(DivX)
(VideoLAN), but when I select one of the files, click
options, select open with tab and choose a permanent
program to open the file with, it alters all the files in
that folder not just the one I want o change. This makes
it very annoying, as you have to keep choosing a program
to open each file instead of just double clicking the
thumbnail (file).

Like I said, I had no problem doing this with Win95, so
hopefully I'm just ding something wrong.

Thanks for help

Shane,

Enable the showing of file extensions under the control panel/folder =
options/view tab, uncheck "hide file extensions of known file types".

Now, look at your files. Each file extension can only have a default =
association with one program. If you select WMP to be the default for =
..avi files, then all .avi files will open (or try to open) with WMP. =
There is nothing you can do to change this behavior beyond =
right-clicking a file and using "open with.." when you want to use a =
different player.

Also, open each of your various media players. Most of them will have a =
section under options or preferences as to which file types they are the =
default for. You can enable or disable these as well to customize your =
playing options. However, and I repeat, a file extension can only have =
one default player associated with it. In other words, two different =
..avi files cannot have two different default players associated with =
them for a default opening. You can add a listing to the right-click =
context menu under folder options if you wish using the file types tab.
