My dell PIII 933 got infected. I ended up replacing the
hard drive. My original windows 98 floppy disk & CD will
not boot.
The hard drive is good. I was thinking the problem is the
Win 98 boot disk. Went online & downloaded new boot disk-
nothing better than original.
If i purchase Win XP as an upgrade, will it load? Will
it be recognized as an upgrade?

If you buy the upgrade, you will need your Windows 98 CD as proof of
prior ownership or the installation will not occur.
What do you mean when you say "will not boot"?
Is the Windows 98 CD damaged or is there a problem with the computer?
The Windows 98 CD needs to be readable by the computer so as to be
used as qualifying media for upgrade.

Sounds like the virus altered the master boot record or imbedded itself
in the memory. FDISK /MBR is an undocumented parameter that will create
a new Master
Boot Record.

FDISK does not automatically build an MBR on any drive except the
primary master. FDISK will only create an MBR on the primary master
drive if the drive does not already have a valid MBR. The 55AAh
signature at the end of the sector is checked by FDISK, if not present
the MBR is written. Also if the drive is blank, an MBR is written.
