Inaccessible hard drive

I am running XP Pro on a 20 gig drive (C). Since I
installed it I have been unable to access my (D) drive, a
40 Gig Maxtor. When I click on properties it reports that
the file system is RAW and that the drive is empty, but I
know for a fact that there is over 20 Gigs of data on
it. I verified this by installing a different (C) drive,
running Windows 98, and I have no problems accessing the
(D) drive!When I use the Disk management utility the
drive is shown as being there but with no drive letter.
If I right click to try and assign a letter everything
is 'greyed out' apart from the Format command - I'm
baffled - can anyone help me-PLEASE!!

Was the old hard drive ever under the watchful eye of Goback? If yes,
you may need to drop that drive back into the original system and remove
the GoBack monitoring from it. Once that is removed, XP should be able
to read it.

Other software that cause a similar problem: drive overlay software that
"fibs" to BIOS about the size of a hard drive.

I did have GoBack running on the Win 98 drive - didn't
realise that it covered the (D) drive as well -
uninstalled it and BINGO! - all my data accessible again!
All I have to do now is wait for the hair I was pulling
out to grow back!!

You're most welcome, Mike! It's very easy to forget to remove GoBack
when shuffling drives around. I'm glad to hear that you were able to
turn things around successfully.
