View Full Version : Can't get ip addresses assigned automatically

My Compaq Evo N410c notebook has both wireless and ethernet cards, and
while both of the cards work fine when i assign fixed ip addresses,
neither one has ever been able/willing to assign ip address
automatically. The same problem occurs at work (wired connection), at
home (wireless network), and at a hotel with a wireless network -- so
the problem is in my computer not the network. COMPAQ tech support
seem clueless about what to do. I presume it's not a hardware problem
since same problem occurs with two different network cards (right?).
Are there some files in XP operating system that handle the automatic
assignment of ip addresses, which could be corrupted and which I
should try replacing? Thanks for any advice (please spell it out
since i have no experience with this kind of thing)...

Make sure that the DHCP Client service is running:

1. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
2. Double click Services and Applications.
3. Double click Services.
4. Double click DHCP Client. If the Service status is Stopped, click
Start.
5. Set the Startup type to Automatic.
