View Full Version : ntbackup.exe?

I just bought a new Dell 8250 with WinXP installed. With the comnputer came
a Reinstallation CD for WinXP (I assume this does not have everything needed
for a clean re-install?). Anyhow, I was looking for ntbackup.exe on the CD,
but it wasn't there. Not on my C: drive either. Is this program worth
having? Where can I get it since it didn't come with my purchase? And why
didn't I get a "real" WinXP CD with the computer?
Thanks
John

IMO the NTBackup program is quite basic. You would do much better to
purchase a third party app especially if you want to backup to CD or create
full system backups. Backup MyPC is the full version of NTBackup. There is a
30 day trial of it here www.stompinc.com
You will need to contact Dell and ask them about their reasons for not
supplying a "real" XP CD. They may sell you an OEM version for a fee.

The Dell re-installation CD contains a complete version of XP, and it will
do a clean re-install. But, XP Home setup does not by default install
NTBackup. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302894 for
instruction for installation. But I would agree with Harry about the
usefulness of NTBackup.

Without any implication of endorsement, Gateway does ship Ntbackup with
pre-installed XP systems, but Harry Ohrm's recommendation has added value
for many users since Ntbackup will not restore media compressed by Backup
(from Win98/ME systems) while the Stomp/Veritas backup product will do this
job for users who replace Win98/ME systems with new XP systems. I installed
both my TBU and external ZIPs from my old Win98 system, and they work fine
on my new XP system with the Stomp product.

In my previous post, I meant Ntbackup will not restore from media that
contains **compressed** backup sets created by Backup on Win98/ME systems.

Thanks to all for the info. I will get something else to backup my files.
Sounds like NTbackup isn't quite what I want.
