View Full Version : Can't ping loopback

I inherited a small peer-to-peer nextwork of XP computers.
They ALL can surf the web. Some are viewable via net
view, but not all. I have checked the basics: NIC config,
routing, IP address conflicts, etc. All look good and/or
identical between working and non-working machines.

The machines that cannot be seen also cannot ping
loopback or their own IP address. (But can surf the WEB!)
These same computers can ping some other computers (and
the gateway) on the same subnet. I read that if the
loopback ping does not work, either NIC is bad or TCP/IP
stack is corrupt. Swapped NIC's between computers, no
help. Ran netsh int ip reset to "uninstall/reinstall" the
IP protocol. No difference.

HELP!

Degree of difficulty: 8 out of 10 (I think)

Thanks!

Jon

The problem is almost certainly caused by a firewall program that's
improperly configured or incompletely un-installed.

Thanks for your reply, Steve! The XP firewall is not
installed on these computers. The firewall you speak of
must be installed on each computer individually, Eh?

I will check for other vendor firewall installs...Any
other ideas?

Thanks again!
