View Full Version : windows 811493 update

I was one of the unfortunate ones to update with windows 811493 update.
Short of removing or uninstalling it, is their any other way to accomplish
this. I have installed no less that thirteen programs and it says it will
revert back to before I installed same. It would take a great deal of time
and effort to do so.
Any fixes?

I was the guy who reported that some people were unhappy with that item.
I got good advice on how to remove it, and it alone. It's just Control Panel,
Add/Remove programs, then find the list of all the Windows programs,
811493 is in the list, just uninstall 811493,alone, period.

I realize that, as I stated before, the message says it will try and revert
back to settings before I installed the (13) thirteen software programs, I
had hoped for an answer that I wasn't already aware of. Or is sarcasm the
standard on the newsgroup?

Hi
You should remove it using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
If you get a warning that other installs may stop working if you remove it,
just ignore it.
This method will not uninstall or affect your other 13 programs you installed
after the 811493 update.

Thanks, I removed it and seems like only one of the programs was affected,
at least it wasn't all of them, again thanks to all who offered constructive
help.

I got the same warning, although I think I had about six programs it said
there might be a problem with. I uninstalled anyway and have had no problems
with any programs since. I noticed my system was faster afterwards also.

I think you're missing the point of his question. He's not asking how to
remove 811493: he already knows how to do that. He's just confused over the
fact that when removing 811493 it tells him that these other programs that
he installed *after* 811493 are going to be "affected". This is just
Microsoft's half-*** attempt at keeping everything proper. He's asking if
there's a way to remove 811493 without potentially "affecting" the 13
programs he installed *after* 811493. The answer, as stated in later
responses, is to ignore the message that the 811493 uninstaller tells you.
Nine times out of ten you'll be fine.
As for his the poster's comment regarding sarcasm: I agree with him.

When I removed 811493, McAfee reported that its files had
been altered and it prompted for a scan and reinstall.
Other than that, no effects noted, except the computer now
runs at normal FAST speed.

As of yesterday, it is still listed as a fix. It was either listed as a

Yes, but that's not much help unless they've fixed it. Has it been - or are
they planning to?
At least they should have added a warning of possible subsequences, which
are insidious.

Sorry, Torgeir, I just delved deeper into "read more" - it's all in there if
you can find it.
I wonder how many people actually do read that, or just adopt the attitude
that "MS says I need it, so I'll download it".
Also, what happens if you have "Auto-download & install" enabled? Once
again. you have the symptoms. but don't know what's causing them.
IMO, because of that last possibility, MS should withdraw it until it's
fixed - after all, it's not Critical.

Are the ones listed in Recommended Update auto-downloaded & installed?

It's still a security update, and getting a performance hit on some computers are not a
good enough reason to pull it completely really. The move to the Recommended Update list
was the reasonable thing to do if you ask me. This way those who want it can install it.

Hi
Note that there are some issues with 811493:
You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013)
Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=819634
If you notice a system slowdown, remove it from Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel instead of doing a system restore. If you get a warning that
other installs may stop working if you remove it, just ignore it.
Back to your problem:
For get Windows Update to work again, renaming or deleting the Catroot2 folder
may solve the problem.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815
Follow the steps 6 to 8 in the Resolution section of above link (do a reboot
first so the computer is "fresh" before you do the steps).
Then try to install the update again.
Disregard that the link above is for SP1, the Catroot2 problem is relevant for
other updates as well. The Catroot2 problem can be avoided by installing
Q817287.
Windows Update 643 Error and the Catalog Database
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817287
If renaming or deleting the Catroot2 folder doesn't help, try this:
Check your "windows update.log" file for specific error code (the log file
is in your windows folder) and take look at this Web page:
