My guess is your registry is fouled up and you need to do a reformat of C:
and reinstall everything. PITA, I know. If it isn't this then perhaps you
have a hardware problem like memory or a motherboard problem. Since it
seemed to happen after you did a registry cleanup I tend to think it is not
likely HW.
Win98SE is a great stable OS so changing it to XP with the hope of more
stability curing the problem is unlikely. Going to a new install of XP will
probably fix it since you will do the equivalent of a reformat and reinstall
of apps. Upgrading XP ontop of the flakey 98SE is not IMO recommended since
you may just carry over the problems.
