View Full Version : WP Home Edition Won't Start

When I try to cold boot, I get a message that Windows did
not succesfully start.
I've tried starting in safe mode; I just get a blue screen
that says: Problem detected... UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME...
Technical info: ***STOP: OXOOOOOOED (OX8OED2B2O,
OXLOOOOOO6, OX00000000, OXOOOOOOOO).
I've clicked "Last Known Good Configuration"; the progress
bar zips across the bottom of the screen, XP's start page
deploys momentarialy, then the same blue screen as above
deploys.
My Startup Disk is in New York, I'm in Puerto Rico for
another few days and need to access my computer now. Any
chance of downloading the required software (provided it
in fact needs additional software) to a portable zip drive
on a second computer I've got (windows 98) and then
starting my computer from that zip drive?
I appreciate the help!

Sounds like boot.ini was zapped.
Go to http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ and in the free software section
download editbini. Copy it to 98 bootable diskette, boot the diskette on the
XP machine and use it to check your boot.ini file.
By default, your boot.ini file should look something like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
