View Full Version : Can't boot to XP disk for installation

December 5th 03, 12:10 AM
Can someone tell me what I can check to find out why I can't boot to the
installation XP disk. After doing a partition and format, I try to boot to
the XP CD and it says no boot record found. As far as I know the CDROM is
working but I suspect the problem might be there. Can someone give me some
things to check PLEASE.........

Is your BIOS set to boot from the CD-Rom first?
Are you "pressing a key to boot CD" when prompted? You only have 5 secs or
the boot sequence pass to the next device.

The boot sequence is right and it gives the following when I press any key
"Boot failure-Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert Boot Media in
selected Boot Device" I think it has something to do with CDROM drivers or?
Can you offer any other options? Please

Perhaps there is a problem with your CD-Rom drive. Windows XP CDs are
bootable. Generic drivers are used so that should not be your problem. If it
isn't booting the XP CD and you have recently partitioned and formatted the
HD then there is nothing on the HD to boot so you receive the message you
are seeing.

Do you have a Windows 98 Start-up floppy? If not you can download one from
here http://quake.axg.net/red2/files/boot98se.exe pop a floppy in the drive
and double click the download to create a floppy. Boot your system with this
floppy. It has drivers for CD-Rom support. Pop a CD into the CD-Rom and see
if you can access it. If not it is likely that your drive is knackered or
possible just dirty. Try cleaning it with a standard CD cleaner. If you can
read a CD then pop your XP CD into the drive and see if you can access it.
If not it is possible that the XP CD is damaged. Microsoft will replace
damaged CDs for a minimal fee

Did the win98 startup disk it tells me diagnostics tools were loaded to
drive D:\ It tells me "MSCDEX ver.2.25 Drive E:\= driver MSCD001 unit 0

I then did fdisk, changed directory to D: which it says is MS RAM Drive

I try E:\drive nothing
Try to boot to cd says "Microsoft Windows 98, then gives a C: prompt.
How can I see if the cdrom is reading a cd? When I did the fdisk, partition
and format did I do something wrong as far as the cdrom is concerned? Should
I do it over and can you give me the steps? I really need to get this system
up. Thanks

Ok the Win98 floppy is recognizing the CD-Rom. Pop a CD into the CD-Rom and
at the at the A:> type
E: then press Enter to change to the CD-Rom drive. Then at the E:> type DIR
and press Enter. The contents of the CD-Rom should be displayed. If not
there is a problem with your CD-Rom reading disks. You may have to replace
it.

Hello Harry,
As per your directions, I put the XP disk in and did E:\ then DIR and it
wouldn't read the disk. I then put in a Win98 disk and typed DIR and it
listed the directory. I know the disk is good at least it was when I
attempted an installed before I decided to use a different HD. Any ideas why
it will read the win98 disk and not the XP disk? Your help is appreciated.

You put the XP disk in the drive, shut down and restart, the
computer boots from the XP disk. You do not do this with
the computer running W98 or ME, just be sure your BIOS is
set to boot from the CDROM.

Thanks Jim,
But if you read the previous thread you will see I have exhausted all that
already. Just can't get it to boot to the XP disk. I am open to suggestions
though. I'll try again and thanks

Some of the directions given are to put the CD in the drive
and browse it, this means the computer is booted into
Windows. That is NOT the procedure to use to boot the XP
CD. XP CD is the boot device when you boot the computer
with the CD in the drive and the CDROM is set to boot the
computer.

You must access your BIOS, probably by pressing F2, F10, esc
or some other key before Windows boots. Check your computer
manual for instructions. If your keyboard has an F-Lock
key, press it as soon as you turn the power on, then press
the F2 (F10, whatever).
When the BIOS opens, use the arrow keys to navigate to the
BOOT menu, use the arrow keys to select the boot order,
select CDROM as first. Exit saving changes. IF YOU CAN"T
set the BIOS to boot from the CD you need to update your
BIOS or download the XP floppy disks used to begin the XP
installation.
Put the XP CD in the drive and turn the computer OFF.

Restart the computer and it will boot from the CD and you'll
be given the options to partition, format, install, repair.

Hope this helps.

Jim he has already determined that his BIOS settings are correct and the
CD-ROM is listed first in the boot sequence. He has repartitioned and
reformatted his HD. When he tries to boot his XP CD the boot process passes
to the HD which gives him the message that no boot sector can be found.
When I suggested that JCW browse a CD I was asking him to do it from DOS by
booting with a Windows 98 floppy, switching to the CD-Rom drive and then do
DIR of a CD. This is to determine whether or not his CD-Rom is reading CDs.
The CD-ROM appears to be connected and is being recognized by the BIOS. When
he boots with a Windows 98 Start-up floppy DOS is recognizing a drive as per
one of his posts but he can not get it to read a CD.

If your CD-Rom can read CDs other than the XP CD then your XP CD might be
damaged. Have you tried reading the XP CD on another system?

As Jim Macklin mentions you might be able to access your XP CDs by using the
6 floppy bootdisk set
Download the file that applies to your version of XP and have a box of
floppies handy

Harry and Jim,
I used the floppies and access was achieved and the installation is
underway. Do you have any insight as to why this was necessary? Normal boot
to the CD wasn't possible and I would like to know why if possible. Thanks
again for you help. You are the greatest...

In that case your BIOS is nor set to boot from the CD. Either it
doesn't have that capability (unlikely unless your computer is
sevral years old) or you haven't set the boot sequence to CD
first (very likely). Assuming the latter, go into the BIOS setup
and make this change.

Hello Ken,
If you will read the rest of this thread you will see what I have been
dealing with. I have the BIOS set right but it won't read it. I have tried a
couple of different bootable disks and 3 different CDROM Drives. I can't
think of anything else that will rectify this and I am hopeful that a MVP
will come up with a remedy...

It sounds like your XP CD is damaged. The boot sector is not being read for
some reason.

Hello Harry,
I thought you had given up on me. After cleaning the CD and booting to the 6
floppies I was able to install flawlessly until the last restart and then at
the Black XP Splash Screen the progress indicator goes across twice and the
screen goes black and nothing. To me that indicates the cd is OK. I won't
load after the splash screen except into Safe Mode. Is there something I can
do with the application in safe mode. The CDROM works obviously and the HD
is recognized but I don't know how to proceed from here. More help and
advice please....

I'm not certain why you thought I'd given up on you. I've been posting
regularly in this thread. A bootable CD has a bootsector as well as files on
it. The bootsector might be damaged. You can still read the files off it but
can't boot from it.

Are you certain that you computer meets the specs to have XP installed on
it?

Specs are a new ECS board with a 1800+ processor on a 60 gig HD w/256 SDRAM-
Is there something I can do from Safe Mode to complete the installation? As
I said before, after the splash screen XP fails to load regularly but I can
go to safe mode. At a restart it gives the options of Normal start up (which
fails) Last Known ...(which fails) Safe mode (which works) What can I try at
this point? I need to get this system up and running soon. Let me know your
thoughts, please

So you've installed a new motherboard and a new hard disk drive?

Sorry, I was reading through the conversation listed and you said new board,
and I though new hard disk drive too, but I want to confirm this.

Also, I want to confirm, that with the new products, that you've actually
successfully installed Windows XP. Is that true?

If all of that is true, then, I'm going to suggest making sure the hard disk
drive and cd-rom are hooked up to Mode 4 hard disk controllers. This will
provide the real first clues as to what the problem is. If everything is
working when you do this and you can get the install to perform flawlessly,
then nothing is wrong with the CD or hard disk drive.

One thing I'll certainly suggest is that when you're messing around with
components inside of the case, make sure the power supply is UNPLUGGED. Just
because the system is turned off via the "Soft Off" button on the front of
the case, does not mean the motherboard has no power going to it.

Also, XP, Windows 2000, and all previous Microsoft software do not support
UDMA hard disk drive controllers and another driver is required for those.
That's why I suggest working off a Mode 4 controller on the motherboard. If
there is no Mode 4 controller, go into the BIOS and set the controllers to
Mode 4. Also you'll want to make sure the BIOS settings are set to their
defaults for the most part. Sometimes there's some settings in there that
can really mess things up for folks and if you've messed with any of the
settings inside there that you are unsure of, there's no telling what kind
of results you'll come out with. Also, make sure you set them to the
default, as not all boards are set to the default right out of the box.

Good luck.

Okay,

How are they hooked up to the motherboard? Both on the same IDE cable? And
to what controllers are they hooked up to? Sometimes there are UDMA 100/133
controllers separate from the PIO Mode 4 controllers. Sometimes you have to
go into the BIOS to tell the controller to use only PIO Mode 4. How that
applies depends upon the motherboard. I'm not familiar with your
motherboard, and it's been awhile since I've done an installation, so I'm
going to rely upon you to provide information to me.

Hello Jim,
HD on IDE 1 as Primary Master and CD on IDE 2 as Secondary Master...The
board is an ECS K7S5A Pro. I can't find anything relating to UDMA
controller and I will try to find out if the PIO Mode 4 is set in the BIOS.
Any further info I can supply please ask..Right now I managed to schedule a
scandisk from safe Mode and it seems to me I should be able to repair this
installation from Safe Mode. Thanks

I'm assuming that you've installed the drivers for the hard disk
controllers. Is that true?

The fact that you can boot into Safe Mode suggests that XP might not be
agreeing with a piece of hardware. If you have onboard video, sound and NIC
check with the motherboard manufacturer to see if you need to update your
chipset drivers. If your cards are separate look for XP drivers for them.
You could also try removing all cards except video and see if you can boot
to the Desktop then add back one at a time to see if you can determine the
problem.

Flaky RAM is one of the leading causes of XP problems. Try reseating your
RAM and if you have more than one stick try removing one stick and see if
that helps. If not replace it with the other. Before poking around inside
the case make sure the power is off and touch an unpainted metal part of the
case to ground yourself before pulling out cards, replacing them or touching
the RAM sticks.

I'd like to add an addendum...

Unplug the power supply before you remove and reinsert any board or memory
or processors.

The cables to the hard disk drive should be okay to mess around with, but
I'd UNPLUG the power supply.

The reason I say UNPLUG, rather than just press the front button, is because
power still flows to the Motherboard and Motherboards will typically have a
light lit up to indicate such. I can't stress this fact enough so I'll say
it once again...

UNPLUG the power supply before fiddling with cards on the inside.

To all who have offered assistance with this issue I send "Many Thanks"but
especially to Harry who seems to have solved the problem with his last
suggestion. It was the video card of all things. I guess it goes to show you
that even brand new hardware can be bad and I would have never thought of
that. Evidently the CDROM still won't boot but the installation after using
the 6 floppies must have succeeded because once I switched out the Video
card the XP OS booted perfectly. I still would like to know why the CD won't
boot, but I am thankful that I can get this system up and running. Thanks
again Everyone...

Just offering a comment... about video cards. I've seen video cards that
have been improperly seated. It seams to happen more often these days
because the pins are so close together. It started happening in the past
when PCI cards came out.

Glad to hear that you got it fixed!

Good luck!

You are welcome JCW. Thank yourself for your perseverance. Troubleshooting
through e-mail posts is a more trying process than face to face 8^)

If you can test the CD on another system to see if the other system can
start the boot from it, that'll tell you the CD is bootable. That narrows
the problem down to either a setting in the BIOS or to a defect in the CD
ROM drive.

I tested it on my son's computer and his gives the option "Press any key to
boot to Atapi cd" and upon pressing a key it went to a screen to choose
original configuration or last known good etc, so I guess it would have
booted. I think there is something inthe BIOS that is preventing it from
Booting to the CD.

Here's a shot in the dark. Ensure that your CD-Rom is connected on the
Secondary IDE Controller and the jumper is set to Master. Your Hard Drive
would then be on the Primary Controller set as Master and your CD-Rom would
be on the Secondary Controller set as Master.
