I have just installed Win XP in a dual boot setup with WinME being
the second OS. I have a second physical drive that WinMe still
recognizes, but the new WinXP doesn't. All want to do is reformat it
which I obviously don't want it to do. Anybody got any tips on how
to get WinXP to recognize and access my second hard drive.
Thanks

Hi,

Start/run diskmgmt.msc, what does it tell you about the second physical
drive? Try action/rescan and see what it says.

Go here ftp://ftp.powerquest.com/pub/utilities/ and download PartInNT.zip
and extract PartInNT.exe from it. Launch it, and at the bottom hit the
button labeled "copy to clip board". Paste the contents back here.

Hi Walter
I followed your instructions and got as far as "copy to clip board"
which I did. I assumed that 'paste the contents back there' is what
"copy to clip board" did.
At any rate I rebooted and there was no change. WinXP still wants to
reformat my slave drive and I don't want it to. Just recognize it so
I can access it and the data presently on it.
Obviously, I messed up somewhere

PartInNT does not solve the problem. It is merely a diagnostic tool. I have
to see what the problem is first, then I can tell you how to correct the
situation.

Launch PartInNt. At the bottom of the PartInNt screen, hit the "Copy to
Clipboard" button.

Reply to this message.

Position the cursor at the top of the reply to this message then hit ctrl-v.
This will copy the contents of the PartInNT report into the reply to this
message which will tell me the partition structure of your drives, and most
importantly will tell me what the 2nd drive thinks it is. I have to see the
PartInNT reports before I can tell you how to proceed.
