Although I have been into Control Panel and have removed Messenger, I still
have its icon in the system tray. How can I remove this unwanted accessory?

Hi,
Uninstall Windows Messenger:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm
Or, after installing SP1, go the the Control Panel/Add & Remove/Windows
Components, and deselect it here.
MSN Messenger will be in the Control Panel/Add & Remove listings.

Hi Rick,
Yes one can use Dougs script to remove messenger altogether, but =
deselecting it from the Add/Remove Components with SP1 installed will =
not list it in the Add/Remove Programs feature in the Control Panel. If =
you look at Messenger when it is listed in the Componets list (though it =
looks as if it can be unchecked, then removed) the file size listed is =
"0" (nothing to remove, so why have it there). If one wants to add it =
there (as another line item), and also in the Add/Remove part, they have =
to open the "sysoc.inf" file in the Windows\inf folder, and remove the =
"hide" attribute from the Messenger reference. Then they can uninstall it =
from Add/Remove Programs.

This is normal, and cropped up after SP1 came out. It doesn't harm
anything, and Messenger is still removed.

Jon,
The utility Rick referenced just runs the command line for the user. This
eliminates the need to edit SYSOC.INF and prevents typo's :)
