Did you just reinstall your OS or did you start over by
formating you HD?
Look at the size of your "I" drive. Compared to your HD
is it unusually small?

Hi Robert,

No it's a fresh hard drive after the last one developed a SMART error and
finally gave up the ghost.

All I did was place the XP cd in the drive, let it find the unformatted
space, did a full format and let it go. Should/could I do something to
ensure the correct drive letters during install?

Hi Jeff,

What differance does it make? Would Partition Magic do the trick?

You still had the old drive attached while installing XP by the sound of =
it. So apparently you didn't try to do a repair install so XP had it =
still listed as a C drive that is why the new system drive letter. IMHO =
the best way for you to get the C drive letter back is to save your data =
=BB only have the new HDD in place =BB format the HDD =BB reinstall =
everything =BB copy the data back.

I have no thoughts about Partition Magic, I use products from =
www.acronis.com.

There are too many registry entries that point to I to make any other =
course worth the time and effort.

Hello,

No I didn't have the old drive in, it had failed totally and had to be
junked. The drive in there was it's replacement. I had tried to do a repair
on the old drive when I started getting errors and before the SMART error
appeared and it all just hung and quite quickly after that the whole thing
failed.

I understand what you're saying but what I am worried about is that it will
happen again (and again etc.). How do I stop it?

Any tips...

Martin

Try installing XP with only the new HDD and a CD-ROM in place. Format =
the drive and create your C partition as part of the install process. =
Connect other drives after XP is up and running on C.
