I accidently threw away the number or character. How do I
get ahold of it, in order to upgrade to Xp?

Ed;
If windows XP is installed, follow this link, look for "View Product
Key XP" near the bottom:
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

If Windows XP was not installed:
Contact Microsoft if Retail:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q295539

If Windows XP is OEM, contact the seller, Microsoft can not help.

The KeyFinder program returns a different key number for my XP Pro version
than came with my HP computer. Jim Harper

Try this, I know it works in Win98
Go to Start, Run, and type in regedit and click OK

Then click down thru this list:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SOFTWARE

MICROSOFT

WINDOWS

CURRENT VERSION

Highlight the CURRENT VERSION, and you will see the Product Key in the right
window pane.

James;
That is the key used by HP when HP imaged the hard drive.
That key most likely will not work if you reinstall Windows XP.
Use the key on the side of the computer if a key is requested.

As Bruce Chambers will explain when he gets here, many OEMs install XP
with an image program, so that the ProductKey in the registry does not
match the product key on the Certificate of Authenticity on the side of
the computer. If you are required to re-enter the Product Key, you must
use the one on the side of the case, not the one that the tool reports
is encrypted in the registry.
