on my friend's computer, which has XP Home, i've been
trying to install various games on it. When copying
certain files from cd's it can't read the file correctly
or something and gives a CRC Error, or Cyclic Redundancy
Check. An error that involves that. He wouldn't let me
format his HD to do a clean install of Windows. Does
anyone have any tips or ideas that we may be able to try?
thanks!

CRC errors on a read from the CD has no effect on the Hard Disk drive on the
machine and your friend not allowing you to format his HDD is correct. The
CD probably has been damaged or is dirty. Try the CD in another drive. If
you get the same type of errors the CD is bad. If you don't get the errors,
try to clean the CD-ROM drive on your friend's computer with a commercial CD
cleaning kit. They do get dirty.
