View Full Version : DUAL BOOT PROBLEM
Scott Robb

I had a multi boot system with windows 98 on the (C:), windows 2000 Pro on
the (D:), and Windows XP on the (E:). For some retarded reason I wiped
windows 98 and lost the boot file. I then wiped and reinstalled windows
2000. Windows 2000 now resides on the C: and windows XP, which I didn't
erase, resides on the D:. I have a lot of important info in windows XP and
don't know how to add it back to my boot.ini file. I have tried different
variations, but have failed at all. Can anyone help me. By the way, I have
to where you can access any of the XP drives through other OS's, so that
route doesn't work either if I am trying to get info off the drive. Thank
you for all your help

Go here ftp://ftp.powerquest.com/pub/utilities/ and download PartInNT.zip.
Extract PartInNT.exe. Launch it. At the bottom, hit the button labled "copy
to clip board". Paste the results back here.

Ok, the first thing you need to do is restore the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM
files from the XP CD
From Win 2000, put in the XP CD and locate NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM in the
I386 folder. Copy these to the root directory of the C: drive.
Next for BOOT.INI, I'm going to make some assumptions. One that your C:
drive is the Primary master, your D: drive is the Seconday master and that
E: is the Primary Slave. This is important, so if its not correct post
back.
The following is an EXAMPLE of a BOOT.INI file that would load Win2K and XP,
with Win2K on C: and XP on E:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Sorry, hit send too early. Before making any changes, post the original
contents of your BOOT.INI file for comparison, otherwise you could wind up
with a non-bootable system.

It's the change in partition enumeration that I'm more worried about.

As long as the drives are physically there, and XP still thinks its on E,
and physically is, it may not be an issue.

Somewhere along his re-installation process, he has lost Partition D, in
which he has his original win2K.
If he wiped out win98 on C and just install win2K on C, he should have 2
copies of win2K (a fresh copy on C and the orignal on D) and XP should still
be on E, this does not seem to be the case.
One marked difference between XP and win2K (as I have discovered the hard
way) is that they assign drive letters differently.
In my system (triple boot between win98, 2K and XP pro), I have 2 harddisks
on Primary (say Clare and Doll) and 1 HD + a CD rom (say Emma and Fiona) on
Secondary. I set thro the BIOS to boot up from Emma.
Win 2K shows that my C drive is Clare, D drive is Doll.
XP pro and win98 show that my C drive is Emma, D drive is Clare.
So, XP and win98 are assigning the letter C to whatever drive that's the
boot drive but win2K is assigning the drive letter based on the physcial
location of the drive.
