View Full Version : Bug up XP logon dialog?

Hi,
It seems that whenever I reboot XP-SP1 and start typing my UserID, no
characters appear in the User edit control, nothwithing that it sports a
flashing carat. If I click the control, all's well.
It seems incredible to me that there could be so obvious a bug in XP, but it
seems equally incredible that any hardware could be at fault. I'm running
on Intel motherboard with a 2GHz cpu, 512MB RAM, and an 80GB drive only 25%
occupied.
It is possible that my senility is coming on faster than I realize. (Only
half a jest.)
This is not a big deal, but after seeing this consistently for a few month,
I thought I should post a message about it.
Regards,
Richard

I've noticed that on occasion, and it seems it's because the login box isn't
the selected item, so typing doesn't do anything. At least that's what I've
found in my case. So I have to click in the login box to make it active,
then type.
Is that what you mean by user edit control, by the way?

Hi,
Yes, when I said "edit control", I meant the the box to the right of the
static control displaying "Password:"
That box displays a blinking verticule (a vertical line) known in Windows
parlance as a carat. According to Windows application design standards, as
I understand them, there should be at most one edit control that dispalys a
carat, and that control should have keyboard focus, i.e., when a user
presses a key, the resulting character data should be sent by Windows to
that control.
However, as you and I have experienced, it sometimes occurs that we press
keys to enter our password, the characters we enter don't seem to be sent to
the "password" edit control.
To my mind, that's a bug in the logon dialog.

Richard

Oddly enough, some things that users think are bugs are "by design"
according to Microsoft. Whether there's a good and/or logical reason for it,
I have no idea. But I'd bet this is one of those things that they'd simply
say, "Yes, we know, and that's how it's supposed to be."
I've just gotten into the habit of clicking in the box to make sure it's
active.

Well, they might say "that's how it's supposed to day", but that would fly
in the face of their own guidelines for designing Windows apps. So I'd say
that response, if offered, would be dishonest.
But it doesn't matter. We'll continue to use our work-around of clicking
the control to ensure that it has keyboard focus.
In the meantime, someone may post a plausible reason for this symptom.
Ciao,
Richard
