View Full Version : Unstable system

Hi

I recently upgraded my system from Windows 98SE to XP Home. I had some
problems during the upgrade, and now my system keeps hanging. I have
established that at least part of this was due to the presence of version
1141 of mshtml.dll, which I have now replaced.

After doing this, it occurred to me that I should check if any other system
files had become corrupted, so I ran signature file verification and got the
following message:

"pscript.ntf in location C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 is
unsigned. Can anyone tell me what this file does and how I can replace it
with a signed version? I have searched help for an equivalent to the W98
"System File Restore" but all I can find is the option to revert my system
to a previous time. Since it has never really been stable since
installation, I don't want to do that.

TIA

John

Hi,

It's a printer driver file, check for an updated set of printer drivers for
your system. An unsigned driver is not necessarily a bad thing however, and
updating it is not wholly necessary unless you are experiencing problems
with that function.

The Win98 function of SFC (System File Checker) exists in a different
fashion. click start/run, type in SFC /SCANNOW and click "ok". You will be
prompted to insert your XP CD as it verifies the integrity of the system
files. Functionally, System Restore does a much better job of fixing the
system than SFC ever did for Win98.
