I have 2 scenarios.

One is a workgroup of all Windows 9x machines. I was told to set a "Master
Browser" to make them communicate correctly. How is this done.

The other is a workgroup that has 9x and NT based machines, how do I set a
master browser on these?

Thanks!

Scott,

In your first scenario, the first machine that is booted in the workgroup
will become the Browse Master. In your second scenario, any NT Server would
win a browser election followed by an NT Workstation. Here is some
information on Browse Masters:

Typically default settings on any 9x or NT box work fine. The only notable
issue is that it may take up to an hour after a given PC is booted before a
give PC will show up in Network Neighborhood. However you can still address
any box via UNC.

On the 9x machines only:
Enable file and print sharing via the network control panel applet.
Highlight the F&P binding and select properties. Highlight Browse Master and
make sure it's set to automatic. Do *not* override this.

On the NT machines, you need do nothing unless you've overridden the
defaults.

The only other possible problem is that your machines have IP addresses that
are on different sub-nets. You can insure that they are on the same subnet
by setting everything to DHCP so that at worse case, APIPA resolves matters.
Or if you don't want to allow the systems to negotiate, then manually set
all IP addresses so they are on the same sub-net.
