Info:

Have a home pc (xp home) that had a firewall client
installed on it. Owner wants to connect to domain but
can't. Upgraded xp home to xp pro (firewall client still
probably installed during upgrade). Had the person bring
the pc into the office to trouble shoot firewall
connection. I uninstalled the firewall client and ran
ipsec -u at the start - run option. Tried to connect the
xp pro machine to an nt 4.0 domain but it doesn't see my
domain. The error i'm getting is:

The domain name x might be a netbios domain name. If this
is the case, verify that the domain name is properly
registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the domain name is not netbios
domain name then the following information can help you
trouble shoot your dns.

Error: DNS name does not exist
error code: 0x0000232B rcode_name_error

I don't have an internal dns server I do however have a
wins server. The pdc shows up in WINS as the domain name.

Any help you can provide or any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the posting.

Based on your description and our research, this error can occur if the
Firewall client may be installed on the client computer. To fix this
error, uninstall the ISA Firewall Client from the Windows client computer
using Add/Remove Programs.

If the Microsoft Firewall Client does not appear in the Add/Remove Programs
list, use one of the following alternate methods:

- If you have basic network connectivity and can establish a connection to
\\server_name\mspclnt, install Microsoft Firewall Client over itself. Once
the Firewall Client software has been reinstalled, go to Add/Remove
Programs where it will be available to remove.

- Manually Remove the ISA Firewall Client using the information found in
the following article
329637 How to Manually Remove and Reinstall Microsoft Firewall Client on
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329637

If you have removed the Firewall Client completely but the issue still
persists, please check if you have other firewall installed. This is is
reported when Norton Internet Security is installed. To correct this
error, disable Norton Internet Security.

Please also disable ICF:
In "Networking and Internet Connections" Properties, on the Advanced tab,
clear the box to "Protect my computer or network", click OK.

In addition, this issue may occur if the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Serviceis is
not running on the client computer. To resolve this issue, start the TCP/IP
NetBIOS Helper Service, and then join the domain.
Run services.msc, in the list of services, double-click "TCP/IP NetBIOS
Helper Service". In the "Startup type" list, click "Automatic". Under
"Service status", click "Start" to start the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service.

If the issue still persists, you can try Safe Mode with network to see if
it can join domain correctly.
Run msconfig, on the boot.ini rab, select Safe Boot and select Network.

You are also recommended to ping the DC and ping the WINS server to check
if it can communicate with them correctly.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian
