View Full Version : Can Not Install XP

M.B.

Every time I try and install Win XP Sp1 it gets to the point where it says
setup will complete in 34 minutes > goes to a black screen with two green
square dots followed by a purple dot in the upper left hand corner

I have tried formating the drive, it is actually a new drive and I have
tied
installing it several times

What in the world is going on

Are you sure all hardware is compatible:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp

See if this link helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q310064

Try it this way:
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Hi

I boot from the CD and I tell the Install CD to perform a format before
installing

The only hardware I have installed are:

I have a ATI Radeon 8500 128 MB card and a 80 GB Maxtor HD and a Liteon
2410b cdrw

I can Install Win 2000 SP3 but I can not install XP SP1

Does this help

Do you have a different video card you could use during the
installation and then swap after Windows XP is installed?

I don't recall the specifics.
But I seem to remember some video cards have a problem while
installing Windows XP.
ATI seems to be it (I know ATI makes a lot of cards), possibly one of
their cards.
The fix IIRC is to install Windows with a different card then swap
cards.
By the way, this is not to suggest the card is bad.

Got it installed using an older ATI Radeon 7000, why the 8500 128 MB does
not allow this, I dont know ... you would think with SP1 it would have
updated a year and a half old card

Thanks for all the help

Did you partition the new drive before trying to format? Did you try to
partition and format using the Maxtor software?

The drive was partioned from a ghost image before

I did not use the maxtor software

What difference does that make
