we have seen a lot similar issues recently. this may help quoted from
Can ping public IPs but not web sites
Symptoms: 1. You can ping any public IPs but not web sites. 2. The routing
table and ipconfig look OK but you can't browse any web sites.
Resolutions: 1. Check the DNS, for example using nslookup to
troubleshooting.
2. To test, disable any firewall. If it works after disabling firewall,
re-configure the firewall and make sure the firewall doesn't black port 43..
3. Check the status of winsock.dll, wsock32.dll or download winsockfix to
fix the problem
4. Also try to disable DNS client service if you don't have domain network
or use ipconfig /flushdns to purge the DNS resolver cache.
5. Apply SP.
6. Try to logon another user.
7. Check Event Viewer for any errors
8. Remove and re-install NIC with latest drive.
9. Assign static IP, Gateway and DNS manually.

I'm having the same problem, only with XP Home. I can ping anything
by IP, but not by domainname. nslookup fails to find server even if I
try other external DNS servers, even though I can ping them fine.
Other machines on the network function fine, router is not blocking
dns. MacAfee firewall is disabled and service stopped.
What I have noticed is that in the registry on the broken machine,
HKLM\System\CurretnControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Param eters\DNSRegisteredAdapters
is blank, whereas on the functional machines, this key is populated.
I've tried ipconfig /registerdns, ipconfig /flushdns, all to no avail.
No entries in eventvwr related tot his issue. I AM logged in as an
admin of the XP Home PC. I've restarted the DNS Client service
numerous times. All adapters I've tried to install are doing this.
User states that it began after installing Linksys USB wireless
adapter drivers. I've uninstalled this, but I think it "took out"
some system files.
What's up? I haven't seen this before. Any ideas anyone?
Any suggestions are appreciated, about to re-install OS....

Unfortunately, I don't think re-installing the OS would solve the
problem. It may, but may not. With Windows 2K/XP one never knows... I
have no idea what they implemented in the OS to behave that weirdly. I
can tell you that I just had a WXP fresh install and it has DNS
problem similar to the ones describe in this thread and similar to the
ones I experienced with W2K a while ago, described in the following
posting:
http://www.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&frame=right&th=a6579c847a429b87&seekm=b72a5ae6.0301121459.3d426f6%40posting.google .com#link1
Back then, I actually gave up on the problem, getting used to the idea
that I have to reboot W2K every 1/2 an hour on average. But then,
after applying SP3, the problem disappeared mysteriously. I have no
idea what was the source of the problem and what solved it (I am not
even sure it was SP3 that fixed the problem).
Anyway, I am now experiencing a very similar problem, but with WXP pro
(after applying SP1 and all security and critical fixes). When logged
on as Administrator, I have no problems resolving addresses. But when
logged on as a restricted user, those same web sites cannot resolve
anymore. Now, get this: once I get such an error, no other site get
resolved - even those that were previously OK for the restricted user.
How does one troubleshoot such a problem???
BTW, I don't think it's a firewall problem, since the firewall is the
same for both Administrator and restricted users.
I Hope someone smart out there has a tip.
Thanks,
Swengtoo

Hi all
Through a lot of persistance, I have solved this.
What happens is that windoze looses it's DNS info. I suspect in my case it was a update or adware removal, but who knows.
With regedit, you will have to manually add a few things. No end of reinstalls, running of winsockfix etc will do this for you.
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Tcpip/Parameters
You must have
Domain REG_SZ <can be empty>
Hostname REG_SZ <machine name>
NameServer REG_SZ <can be empty>
NV Domain REG_SZ <machine name>
NV Hostname REG_SZ <machine name>
SearchList REG_SZ <empty>
You should also have akey named DNSRegisteredAdapters which was completely missing on mine.
Under this is a class ID of the curerntly active interface
Then the entries are
DNSServerAddressCount REG_DWORD <n>
DNSServerAddresses REG_BINARY <n ip addresses of DNS servers>
<in my case n=2, and the data was "c2 a8 08 64 c2 a8 04 64" corresponding to 194.168.8.100 194.168.4.100 but unless you are an NTL customer, you wont be able to use. Your ISP should give you these numbers - they are the DNS servers>
DomainName REG_SZ <can be empty>
HostName REG_SZ <machine name>
PrimaryDomainName REG_SZ <can be empty>
I hope this helps anyone that struggle with this. It has taken me about 10 hours to solve this problem.
