View Full Version : XP Start Menu Questions

I thought I posted these questions last week but when I
came back for answers I couldn't find it. Either it
didn't post or I forgot where I put it. I've checked
Basics, General, and New Users, since I would have put it
in one of these but can't find it. So if the questions
have been answered before please bear with me and answer
again or direct me to the previous post. Thanks.

Now on to the questions:

1. When I click on START I get a balloon with "New
Programs Installed" pointing to the All Programs button.
How do I get rid of this? It has been weeks since I
installed a new program. When will this go away? Don't
tell me just to turn off balloon tips since I am new to
XP and want them on for now, but is there any other way
to get rid of this thing?

2. On the All Programs menu some of the items are
colored orange. I see no pattern to it as far as
programs I haven't used, or ones I use frequently. Why
is it like this and is there a way to change it?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Sadly, he's using the CDO interface and may never see your reply, Torgeir :(

LOL, I know, so I also sent him an e-mail informing him that I had responded to
his question in the newsgroup. I usually do that when I see that the OP is using
the CDO interface...

The CDO interface is the HTML Web interface at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/default.asp and
uses CDO (Collaberation Data Objects) to actually send the newsgroup post.
The CDO and Web interface are the same. Generally users have trouble
finding answers to their posts using web interface.

CDO interface is the MS implementation of a web interface to the NNTP. In
this specific instance though, just the MS news groups. Google also has a
web interface, but relies on a different mechanism. Generally any of the web
interfaces tend to have different issues with usability.

Since you're using OE, simply right click any message, select properties.
With most NNTP applications you'll see something like the following two
lines from the properties of your message:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106
X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106

Other news readers will vary, but with practice you can figure out what the
NNTP client is.
With the MS CDO interface the above reads:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4910.0300
