im using windows xp pro and under my username i have one
unread messages although there are no messages in my
email where does this come from and how do i make it go

Since you are using the web based newsgroups, you will need to copy and
paste the link
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
into your web browser address bar. That would be the address bar at the top
of this page. Most people using the newsgroups use a newsreader and can
click on the link for it to open their web browser, the web based format
does not allow for that.

Place the mouse at the end of the link, press the left mouse button and
continue pressing while moving the mouse to the left. You will see the text
being highlighted. Select all the text in the link and will the mouse still
placed over the highlighted text, press the right button and select copy.
You can now paste the copied link into the web browser address bar. You will
need to use the mouse to highlight the link that is currently in the address
bar, then with the mouse still over the highlighted text right click and
select paste.
