jared thomas

Hi can anyone help me everytime I turn on my computer
this message comes up:
Windows File Protection
Files that are required for windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, windows must restore the original
versions of the files.
then it asks me to put the cd in so i do it and i dont
know what i am supposed to do after that. Can anyone help
me with this problem if so can you be detailed so i wont
screw up? thank you.

Jared;
Do you have a retail Windows XP CD, OEM or what?
What happens if you hit ENTER?
Is there a box to type in?
Do you eventually get to the Desktop?
Try System Restore.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
If you do not get to Desktop, reboot, start tapping F8 about once a
second.
At menu select Safe Mode, then try System Restore.
Otherwise reboot press F8 once a second, at the same menu choose "Last
known good configuration."
Try this then:
Start/Run
Type "cmd" ENTER.
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER.
Follow the prompts and have the Windows XP CD ready.

Jared;
You may be confusing System Restore with the Restore feature of your
CDs.
Your CDs can erase everything and set the computer similar as it was
when new (ALL data destroyed).
System Restore does not touch personal files, it primarily sets system
files back in time to a state before the problem started.
You get to choose from many available dates.
See this for more about System Restore:
http://microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/itcommunity/Newsgroups/FAQSRWXP.asp
System Restore is very safe with data, however it is always a good
idea to back up important data just in case.

Personal data is normally safe during a system Restore.
It is always a good idea to have back-ups of important data just in
case.

If you use the restore CD's that come with the computer, most likely it
will format the drive and wipe out all information currently there.
You need to check your Computer documentation and see if the manufacturers
restore method allow for a non-destructive restore.
The restore CD's are not part of Windows XP, they are the manufacturers way
to set the system back to the original shipped state.
The XP restore is accessed from Start> All Programs> Accessories> System
Tools> System Restore. Using this type of restore will not remove your
files.
