Does anyone know how to erase floppy discs in Windows XP
Home Edition? I used to be able to erase in Win. 98.

Right click the floppy drive in Windows Explorer and select Format.

It's not very different in XP. Select all the files (Ctrl-A) and
press the delete key.

Or just reformat the floppy (right-click and choose format).

Barb,

Since you are asking about "erasing" instead of Formatting, I would take a
different approach.

I use a bulk eraser purchased from Radio Shack. It is intended to erase
video tapes, but I use it on all floppies, then I do a Format as described
by others.

Reason that I do this: I used to recycle all those AOL disks that I received
in unsolicited SnailMail and one day my AV program discovered a virus on the
AOL diskette that I had simply reformatted. Turns out that some viruses will
not be destroyed by a simple reformat (true of HDDs too, just more difficult
to resolve) and thus totally destroying all file structures with a bulk
eraser takes care of this potential hazard.
