I had windows 98 before and it had scan disc and was
wondering what the equal to it was in xp home if it even
has this type utility

Open a Command Prompt window and type in CHKDSK /? Additionally, you can
right click on a drive in Windows Explorer, go to Properties, Tools, Error
Checking.

It's called chkdsk in XP.

Go to Start->Help and Support and type scandisk into the search box.
